Day 20 - Friday and Saturday

Up 0.8 pounds from yesterday, down 15.2 pounds from the beginning, and down 91.2 pounds from my heaviest weight.  The gain from yesterday is to be expected since I’ve started eating solid food again.  Your digestive tract can hold 5-7 pounds of food, so a little gain is normal.

I just did 1.2 miles, walking for 3-4 minutes and jogging for 1-1/2.

I like the salad I made!

Saturday

First day off the fast.  I met with my trainer this morning at www.fitnessinfusiononline.com We came up with a weekly schedule for me that incorporates more stretching and strength training than I’ve been doing.  I’ve been running 5 days a week and doing boot camp one day a week.  I’m on my church’s running team and we had a clinic this morning to learn some pre and post run exercises, proper technique, nutrition, etc.  We all went to lunch at Panera afterward and I got You Pick Two.  I ordered a small bowl of Sonoma Chicken Stew and half of a Bacon Turkey Bravo sandwich.  I had eaten all the stew and a little more than half the sandwich when I realized I was full.  Boom!  Just like that!  It wasn’t enough to take home for later.  I knew that if I kept it in front of me I’d nibble at it and there was no need to do that.  I got up and threw it away.  Yes, I threw away perfectly good food.  Better to have it go to waste than have it go to waist.  J

Since a few days after I started this fast I’ve known that I wanted BBQ when I was done.  I got it for supper today!

Mmmmmmmm!!!  I ate half the ribs and less than half of the pulled pork and brisket.  I picked at the roll but it was made from white flour and offered me nothing.  My meal came with 4 mini sides.  Brisket chili - L.  Potato salad - K.  Coleslaw - K.  Mac & cheese - K.  I gave them to my mom and dad.  Oh!  Instead of sweet tea, which I used to say I bled, I got half sweet and half unsweet.  Perfect!

I love being in control of my taste buds instead of them being in control of me!

One of my purposes for doing this fast was to rein in my flesh.  Praise God!  With His help I'm doing that!

I just plain don't want to

I'm waiting for it to get light enough for me to go out jogging by myself.  It's 6:34 a.m. and still completely dark out.  I don't want to.  I want to go back to bed.  I want to get some work done (not really) so I can earn some money.  I want to...that's about it, actually.

What I don't want to do is jog.  But 3-1/2 weeks away from my debut race I can't afford not to.  And I took off this past Saturday and Sunday.  I NEVER take off two days in a row.  So I can't afford to take another day off after only one day back.

I thought that maybe if I re-read some of my first posts it would inspire me to get out there and run.  Here's an excerpt from the first one:

"My reason for taking up this blog again, which I set up 1-1/2 years ago but never did anything with, is to encourage you to allow God to dream big within you so that together you and He can do amazing things, hard things, things that you'd never be able to do on your own. And to encourage you to give Him the glory and credit for them."

I really don't think God's going to do anything amazing with me if I go back to sleep.  Work will still be here when I get back.  I need to just go.  I may need to make each tree I pass a marker.  "Just go to the next tree."  "Just go to the end of this section."

God, You're going to have dream big within me this morning.

Man, it's hot out there!

Just as my daughter and I were leaving for exercise class this morning she got a call that it was canceled due to lightning.  Oh.  Okay.  Now I can finish my work from yesterday and it won't be as late as it would've been if I'd let it wait until we got back from class.  When work was done and turned in, about 9:30, I decided to do my run since we didn't have class.  It's BRUTALLY HOT out there.  It's bad enough to jog at 6:30 in the morning but 9:30 is just ridiculous!  Yogi Berra used to say that 90% of the game is 50% mental.  Yeah.  Think about it.  What he meant was that football or jogging or anything physical isn't just physical.  It's also mental.  Boy, I found that out today.  This week I'm jogging 2 sections plus 100 steps.  One week I do an ABA pattern (mile 1, then mile 2 is turned 90 degrees, then mile 1 again).  The next week I do a BAB pattern just to keep my mind fresh.  I like routine but not ruts.  A little change is a good thing.  This morning, though, I was really battling my mind that thought I was crazy for jogging in the heat and humidity.  I wanted to stop like I haven't wanted to in months!  After one section I thought I was supposed to turn but I was really supposed to go straight.  It took only about 15 seconds to figure it out in my head, but...man, it was BRUTALLY HOT out there!  I had to make myself do at least this section.  If I wanted to quit after that, fine, but I had to try.  And the next section.  And 100 more steps.

After about half a mile of that, I did stop.  I went 2 miles total.  And that's okay.  Tomorrow is another day.  At least I did 2.  That's more than if I'd not gone at all.

Glorious?

5:30 a.m.  Uuuuunnnnhhhh.  I do NOT want to get out of bed.

You'd never know I went to bed at 9:30 and was asleep before 10, would you?  Almost 8 full hours of sleep.  (Thank You, God!)  But I still didn't want to get out of bed this morning.  And my lower back hurt.  It would've been so easy to just skip jogging today.  As I sat on the edge of the bed I wondered how this is supposed to give God glory.  Wouldn't it be more glorious if I jumped up and could barely contain myself as I got dressed and put my shoes on?  Wouldn't it be glorious if I was so excited I started running in place in the living room as I waited for it to get light enough to go outside?  Maybe.  It certainly would be exciting and fun to write about.  But that's not what happened this morning and it's not what has been happening for quite a while now.

Is drudgery glorious?  Is doing what I know I need to do and what is good for my body even when I don't feel like it glorious?  I...think...so.  As I jogged and walked, God encouraged me to blog about this.  The good, fun, exciting times and the blah times when I feel like it makes no difference.

Stephen Curtis Chapman's new song that's all over the radio is called "Do Everything."

You’re picking up toys on the living room floor

for the 15th time today

Matching up socks and sweeping up lost

Cheerios that got away

You put a baby on your hip and color on your lips

and head out the door

And while I may not know you I bet I know you

Wonder sometimes does it matter at all

We’ll let me remind you it all matters just as long as you

Do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you

Cause He made you to do

Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face

And tell the story of grace

With every move that you make

And every little thing you do

OOoh ooooh oooooh

Maybe you’re that guy with the suit and tie

Maybe your shirt says your name

You may be hooking up mergers, cooking up burgers

But at the end of the day

Little stuff big stuff in between stuff

God sees it all the same

And while I may not know you I bet I know you

Wonder sometimes does it matter at all

We’ll let me remind you it all matters just as long as you do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you

Cause He made you

To do every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face

And tell the story of grace with every move that you make

And every little thing that you do

Well maybe you’re sitting in math class

Maybe on a mission in the Congo

Maybe you’re working at the office

Singing along with the radio

Maybe you’re dining at a five star

Or feeding orphans in Myanmar

Anywhere and everywhere you are

Whatever you do it all matters

So do what you do and don’t ever forget

to do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you

Cause He made you to do

Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face

And tell the story of grace as you do

Everything you do to the glory of the One who made you

Cause He made you to do

Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face

And tell the story of grace with every move that you make

And every little thing that you do

Ooh oooooh

Every little thing you do

So I'll keep getting out of bed or dragging myself out of bed if necessary and jogging, helping Brianne with math, transcribing, thrift shopping, and doing whatever I do to the glory of the One who made me.  Some days it will be by sheer faith that I do it because I can't see how it can possibly be glorious.  I'll just trust God that it is.      :-)

Part of My Jogging Route

A few months ago I said I would try to post pictures of my jogging route. I can't take the camera with me when I'm jogging and I'm always too busy to go out and take pictures another time. Or it's too hot. Well, I finally did it the other day. This is two of 36 jogging sections on my 3-mile route. From where I'm standing to the end of where the road appears to be white is 2 sections, about 300 steps. I jog that, turn the corner, and this coming week will jog 30 more steps. Then I'll walk for the rest of that section and jog another two sections like this plus 30 more steps, etc. for 3 miles. Anyone want to join me? ;-) Really.

2 Miles!

I'm now jogging 2 miles and walking 1!  : )

It's still not 2 miles all together, but I'm getting there!  I used to wonder what it would be like when I had only one section to walk and recover between jogging sections.  Now I know.  It's not so bad.   On the other hand, these last two days of jogging 2 and walking 1 have been difficult to actually jog.  I feel sluggish.  It's probably the few pounds that have crept on.  : ((((  Yes, I've gained a few pounds because I've been compromising and eating small amounts more than I need to lately.  I'm back on track but feeling the consequences of those decisions.  Siiiigggghhhh.  Just being honest.  Thank You, God, for forgiveness!

Another reason for the gain is very likely lack of sleep.  I've also asked God to keep showing me how to make wise decisions with my time so I don't have to be up so late and early working.  I have some off time coming up later this month to go to the homeschool convention and I'm looking forward to sleeping more than 4 or 5 hours a night!

More of Jesus, Less of Michele.  More of Jesus, Less of Michele.  More of Jesus, Less of Michele.  : )

Glimpses of the future

On two different jogging sections yesterday, I found myself going 140 extra steps.  Wait!  No!  That's next week's number; this week's is 130!

I'm getting there, maybe faster than I'd planned.

Hebrews 12:1b - "...let us run with endurance the race God has set before us." (emphasis mine)

He's pushing me in spite of myself.  And even though I protest a little at first, once I think about it I really don't mind.  My feet are in Your hands, God!  : )

I don't need easy.  I just need possible.

I don't need easy. I just need possible.

I took Brianne and her friend to see Soul Surfer the other night after prom.  Midnight showing.  Seeing it any other time of day (like in the afternoon when it's cheaper) would've been fine.  Anyway...time aside, I highly recommend the movie.  It's based on events in the life of Bethany Hamilton, a pro surfer in Hawaii.  In an interview she said the movie is very accurate and not much was changed to make it more marketable to Hollywood.  Bethany had her left arm bitten off by a shark and came back to compete again after wrestling with questions like, "Why, God?"

"It won't be easy," she's told, to get back up on that board and compete without the strength and balance of one of her arms.

"I don't need easy," she responds. "I just need possible."

That's my new saying.  Jogging isn't easy and the excitement of having a new goal has worn off.  Now the drudgery has set in.  Maybe writing Bible verses and lines like Bethany's on a T-shirt like I planned to do will help.  I have the shirt, I just haven't gotten around to doing it.

I don't need easy.  I just need possible.

Progress

I was at a potluck for lunch yesterday. I prayed the day before and yesterday morning and even in line that God would help me make good choices and that I'd enjoy the food without feeling either stuffed or deprived. Like I've said in some of my http://swshonline.com/ (Strong Women Surrendered Hearts) posts, the Publix fried chicken that I could have any day of the week, I passed up. Brianne got some but didn't eat all of it so I finished her piece. That was just enough to give me a little of the taste but not enough to bloat me or make me feel like I'd deliberately sinned. I chose about 3 or 4 strawberries (that was MAJOR self-control!), a brownie (the smallest one), some raw veggies and fruit, a few small helpings of casserole-type stuff, etc. I didn't heap one food on top of another, but my plate was full. And I had only one plate, not one for regular food and one for dessert. I ate and was satisfied. Then I started to feel the desire to go back for more. Are you kidding me???!!! I recognized it as a lie straight from hell so I didn't go back, but I also saw how easily I did in years past, for no reason other than the satisfaction of my taste buds. I felt the old pull, but I almost laughed in its face! (And I didn't go back.) I even had sweet tea, but only one cup.

The root of my problem (indulging my flesh) still tries to throw its weight around (interesting choice of words!), but I don't have to obey it. I see how strong it was before, how weak it is now, even if still present, and how much weaker it will become in the future. The more I give my struggle to God and am honest about it, the more He empowers me to say no to what doesn't honor Him.

Today I upped my jogging 10 steps, to +70.  Walk 2 sections and jog 1 section plus 70 steps for 3 miles.  Brandice Lardner of http://www.fitnessinfusiononline.com/ ran with me.  Thanks Brandice!  She said I had good form and a good pace.  Yay me!  We figured that we ran about 1-1/2 miles.  I came home and did the math (should've had Brianne do it ; )) and found out that's pretty much right.  A mile is about 2000 steps so 1/2 a mile is about 1000 steps and 70 extra steps x 12 sections = 840 steps.  Almost 1/2 a mile.  I'm jogging almost half of a 5K!  I'm getting there!

Nothing's Stopping Me

I've been walking 2 sections and jogging 1 + 60 steps this week.  I did that Monday through Thursday.  My schedule was such that I couldn't do it today.  My Salt & Light group met at Freedom Lake Park today, though, instead of at our leader's house, so we walked 3 times around the lake, which totaled just over 2 miles.  Something's better than nothing.  : )

Jogging would not have been a good idea today anyway, since this morning I twisted my knee rushing to get the garbage can to the street because I thought I heard the garbage truck.  Turned out not to be.  : (  I think I planted my foot and then twisted my leg without my foot going too or something like that.  Whatever happened, I limped to the street pulling the can behind me and then limped back into the house.  I've been wearing an Ace bandage all day.  It's not so much pain as it is discomfort, but I don't want to chance doing anything worse to it.  I felt the discomfort all three times around the lake, but it didn't keep me from walking.

I had hip pain about two weeks ago only on the left side but it was very painful to walk.  I researched and think it was the tensor fascia lata muscle.  I did some stretching exercises and applied heat as often as I could and it's about 95% gone.

I started exercising seriously almost 2 years ago but it wasn't until the past two weeks that I've had any kind of injury at all.  What's happened in the last two weeks?  I made a committment and set a goal.  The devil doesn't like it when we get serious about God and His glory.  He doesn't mind lukewarm Christians at all because they're no threat to him, but when someone gets serious about doing what God's told them to do and giving God credit for it, satan gets mad and does everything he can to stop that.  I didn't realize until today that that's what is going on here.  The more I thought about it, I actually laughed as I realized that I kept jogging or at least walking through both injuries!  Take that, jerk!  You can't stop me!

Hebrews 12:12-13 (NLT) - So take a new grip with your tired hands and stand firm on your shaky legs.  Mark out a straight path for your feet.  Then those who follow you, though they are weak and lame, will not stumble and fall but will become strong.
